The Friendship Circle of Virginia is celebrating the completion of an exceptionally successful 2023-2024 program year marked by significant growth and numerous impactful initiatives.

This year has been transformative for the organization, demonstrating its dedication to fostering inclusive communities and enhancing the lives of individuals with disabilities.

Remarkable Growth and Increased Engagement

The past year witnessed a robust increase in both participation and community engagement. The average attendance at Friendship Circle events surged reflecting the growing interest and involvement within the community.

New family intake rose by 16%, underscoring the expanding reach and appeal of the organization’s programs.

Expanded Birthday Circles and New Initiatives

Among the highlights of this program year was the introduction of an additional summer Birthday Circle, bringing the total to nine Birthday Circles generously sponsored by the Jewish Community Federation of Richmond.

These events have become a beloved staple, with an average attendance of over 70 attendees, which is an impressive 52% increase compared to the previous year.

In response to the consistent growth and evolving needs of the community, Friendship Circle has taken significant steps to deepen its impact. The hiring of a Director of Engagement marks a strategic move to foster more personal connections and better serve the families involved. This role is pivotal in ensuring that each family feels supported and integrated into the community.

Inaugural Disability Expo

Photo Credit MorningStar PVAA major milestone for the organization was the launch of the inaugural Disability Expo in partnership with the Weinstein JCC.

This event brought together non-profit organizations and businesses that provide a wide range of services and resources for individuals with disabilities, from infants to senior citizens, and their families.

The expo showcased the wealth of support available and created a valuable networking platform for attendees.

Disability Inclusion Day at The Diamond

This year, Friendship Circle proudly hosted its 3rd Annual Disability Inclusion Day at The Diamond. The event achieved remarkable success, evidenced by a 20% increase in individual ticket requests compared to the previous year.  This inclusive baseball game showcases that it is possible to create a supportive, welcoming, and inclusive environment for those in the community who want to attend America’s favorite pastime.  Disability Inclusion Day was the third most attended game among all MiLB games that day.

Enhanced Support for Parents

Recognizing the vital role of parents and caregivers, Friendship Circle is enhancing its support for them.

The kickoff of a parent panel series on July 10th will provide an informative discussion on life planning. Additionally, more parent outings are planned for the 2024-2025 program year, offering opportunities for relaxation and connection.

Future Partnerships and Events

Looking ahead, Friendship Circle is excited to announce several upcoming partnerships and events.

On July 28, the organization will host a “Night Out with Jeff Katz,” where parents will hear about Jeff’s journey as a parent to a child with disabilities and how to recognize the wins.

On Aug. 25, FCVA is hosting an “All Abilities Sports Day” in collaboration with Sportable and Jacob’s Chance.

This event promises to be an inclusive celebration of athleticism and community spirit. Additionally, plans are underway for a Disability Fashion Show, highlighting adaptive clothing available in the community as well as the talents and uniqueness of individuals with disabilities.

Despite these new initiatives, Friendship Circle remains committed to its core programs that have garnered widespread popularity. Friends@Home and Friends with Pens continue to be cornerstone activities, fostering meaningful connections and creative expression among participants.

Looking Forward

Lisa Plotkin, M.Ed. has been in the field of Early Childhood Education since 2004 as an educator, administrator, advocate, and professional development facilitator.  She begins an EdD program at American Jewish University in the fall of 2024 to further study Jewish Early Childhood Education.  She proudly joined the Jewish Community Federation of Richmond as the PJ Library Coordinator in early 2024 and aims to create and strengthen opportunities for Jewish families to happily engage in Jewish living and build family friendships within our Richmond community. Having built her own lifelong friendships beginning at the Weinstein Jewish Community Center at age three herself, she understands the value of Jewish friendships, cultural traditions, and engagement.  Lisa looks forward to welcoming you to PJ Library events and connections throughout the year!
