A Fun Way to End the School Year

While Congregation Or Atid’s Sam and Helen Kornblau Religious school’s last day celebration was originally planned to be outside, these plans had to be changed due to the rainy weather.

Instead, the last day of school celebration was held at the Sky Zone Trampoline Park and included pizza and an ice cream truck.

The children really enjoyed themselves!  A special thank you goes out to the Tinsley family for planning this amazing day as well as to the teachers and staff. We look forward to seeing the students and families again during the summer at the planned splash pad and movie night events.

Stay tuned for next year’s school registration and events.

Lag B’Omer Celebration for Young Adults

On Thursday, May 11th, the young adult groups at Congregation Or Atid and Beth El (Jewish Bridge RVA) sponsored a joint program for young adults (25-45 years old) to welcome the beginning of Lag B’Omer.  This program was held in the evening outside at Congregation Or Atid.

Participants gathered around the fire pits, sipped drinks, played games, made smores, enjoyed great conversations, all while building meaningful relationships within our community.  It was such  a great success and there will be more events like this to come in our future.

Or Atid’s Annual Meeting

Congregation Or Atid held its annual meeting/brunch for its members on June 2.

The meeting was led by President, Dr. Robert (Bob) Shayne (above), where he provided a summary of all of the wonderful programs and events during this past year and thanked Rabbi Sherry Grinsteiner for all her hard work, energy, and leadership.

Highlights of the meeting also included a vote on a proposed change in the leadership and organizational structure of the congregation, on a one-year trial basis.

This new structure was designed to meet the changing needs of the congregation and make it easier for volunteers to contribute their time and expertise as well as provide mentorship and leadership skills to emerging leaders.  It is also a forward-thinking way of meeting the synagogue’s strategic and operational needs. An evaluation of the new structure will be ongoing.

The annual meeting also included a presentation of awards for members who have gone above and beyond in support of the synagogue and Jewish community at large.  This year’s award winners as follows:

  • Deeds of Loving Kindness- Ephraim Seidman
  • Love of Torah- David Epstein
  • Strength of Torah-Michael Schoenhaut
  • President’s Special Award- Rick Wiener

 Young Jewish Families-Upcoming Events

So, we’re going to change plans slightly.  The event will be on July 14th from 10-12 p.m. at the Twin Hickory splash pad (rather than at Lake Anna).  We will provide light refreshments and snacks.

YJF Presents Summer Splash Pad

Join us on July 14th from 10-12 p.m. for some summer fun at the Twin Hickory splash pad!  Be sure to dress for the heat, and put on your sunscreen.  There is no charge for this event, but please register so we know how many drinks and snacks to bring.

Also, we will be hosting a movie event on August 24th from 4-7 p.m. at COA.  We plan to have ice cream and stream The Lion King.  We should be able to get some marketing materials for this in the next week or two.
