Dr. Joseph Laver, chief of hematology/oncology and Children’s Hospital Foundation Endowed Chair in Pediatric Cancer Research at VCU Health. will speak at a gathering the week prior to Hadassah Richmond’s Elinor Bloom Marshall Humanitarian Award (EBMHA) program.
The event will be held in the Sukkah at the home of Claudia and Steve Biegler for all sponsors of $1,000+ for the EBMHA. The Bieglers want to honor and thank the donors of the EBMHA, for which Claudia is being honored.
There has been a lot of focus on the trauma and mental stress that has plagued the children in Israel since the Oct. 7 war began.
Dr. Laver will share his unique perspective of working with children both here and in Israel. A one-of-a-kind expert in bone marrow transplantation, Dr. Laver has dedicated his life’s work to curing childhood cancer.
Dr. Laver came to Richmond from Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem. He received his medical degree from Technion in Haifa, Israel, and completed his pediatric internship and residency in Israel. He is board-certified in pediatrics and pediatric hematology/oncology.
At Hadassah University Hospital in Jerusalem, Dr. Laver was Professor and Director of the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Center after rebuilding and reestablishing the pro-gram where Hadassah is a leading medical force in Israel.
Prior to this, he served as Chief Medical Officer and Professor of Pediatrics of the Stony Brook University Hospital.
He also served as the Executive Vice President and Clinical Director, and Chief of St. Jude’s clinical operations. Before St. Jude’s, Dr. Laver served as Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at the Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center, where he held the Jesse Ball DuPont Professorship in pediatrics.
Prior to that, he served at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and Cornell University Medical College in New York.
“I’ve had the privilege of providing medical care and meeting fantastic patients and colleagues at several institutions over the last few decades,” said Dr. Laver.
He has been on the Best Doctors in America List for 15 years and published over 100 articles as well as multiple chapters in text books.
The Elinor Bloom Marshall Humanitarian Award will be presented at a special brunch on Sunday, Oct. 27.
Funds raised from the event will go to the Herman Dana Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Hadassah Hospitals. The purpose of the division is to keep Israel’s children mentally and emotionally healthy. Sponsorships are available now and individual tickets for the event will go on sale in October.
