It’s time to register for Religious School!

As the Richmond temperatures rise this summer, preparations for the coming Religious School year are also heating up!

Clergy and staff have been hard at work researching, writing, editing, and designing this year’s curriculum for publication and distribution to students once classes begin on Sunday, September 8th.

All Religious School topics are developed in-house and compiled into a book that the entire school uses; each class learns the same curriculum each week in a way appropriate to the grade level.

During the year, First Steps (pre-K) – 7th grade students will learn about weekly Torah portions; Jewish history; Jewish values; Hebrew vocabulary; prayers; and Israeli culture, history, and geography. 8th – 12th graders can work as madrichim, or teachers’ assistants, on Sunday mornings throughout the year.

Older students—those in 8th – 10th grade—are encouraged to enroll in Beit Midrash classes on Monday evenings, with Confirmation classes for those in 9th and 10th grade.

Beth Ahabah Teens and Temple Youth (BATTY) groups offer students in 2nd – 12th grades the opportunity to connect with other Jewish youth in a fun and supportive environment.

Recent youth group activities have included Chanukah and Passover celebrations, holiday cooking workshops, cardmaking for Jewish American service members and Israeli soldiers, mini-golf, and a polymer clay mezuzah class.

BATTY is affiliated with The National Federation of Temple Youth (NFTY), which offers opportunities to teens to connect on a regional and/or national level.

The teen youth group (8th – 12th grades) is run by its own four-member board. For questions about BATTY, please contact Sarah Roper at programs@bethahabah.org.

Sunday FUNday—the opening day of Religious School followed by snacks, games, and fun—takes place on Sunday, Sept. 8th.

Please see BethAhabah.org for membership and registration information, and contact Heather Dinkin, Director of Congregational Operations, at hdinkin@bethahabah.org if you have questions.

We look forward to seeing our students, parents, and teachers on the first Sunday in September!
