Here are two programs with speakers set for August
Aug. 19 – Thomas Cox, Attorney and Osher presenter. “No Happy Ending: Roman Polanski and Chinatown.” Many consider the 1976 “neo-noir” detective thriller Chinatown one of the greatest movies of all time: suspenseful and visually compelling with superb performances by Jack Nicholson and Faye Dunaway in career-defining roles.
Director Roman Polanski experienced personal tragedies, and subsequent criminal behavior that ultimately resulted in his flight and exile from the United States. This presentation will examine Polanski’s troubled personal history and how it affected both the creation of, and our lasting impressions about, this dark and disturbing Hollywood classic.
Aug. 26 – Sam Revenson, chair of the Federation’s Israel and Overseas Committee and a Federation Board Member who is also a former board member of the JCC, Richmond Jewish Foundation, Temple Beth- El and Beth Sholom Home. His topic: “The Richmond Jewish Community Relationship with our Sister City of Zaporizhia, Ukraine; before the war, today, and moving forward.”
Sam will discuss the whole of Ukraine with a map and history of Jewish Community, primarily post World War 2, for context and zooming focus to Zaporizhia specifically.
He will introduce the audience to specific people with photos, their JCC, educate attendees on the specifics of global Jewish agencies like JDC and the Jewish Agency for Israel, and how it all ties together with our Weinstein JCC, Federation, JFS, RTA, and more.
