Israeli-Ladino folk singer and trombonist Nani Vazana

On Thursday, Sept. 26 at 7 p.m,, the Weinstein JCC is thrilled to present Israeli-Ladino folk singer and trombonist, Nani Vazana, as the inaugural event of the 2024-25 Arts + Ideas season.

Nani Vazana, an Israeli-born artist whose music is documented in the Library of Congress and ranked on the World Music Charts, is renowned for her unique contributions to the Ladino language. Ladino, the language of Sephardic Jews expelled from Spain in the 15th century, is now spoken in only small communities in Turkey and Israel.

Vazana is one of the rare artists worldwide who writes and composes new songs in this endangered language. Her recordings, including her latest album Ke Haber (What’s New), blend adaptations of historical texts, traditional Ladino songs from Turkey, Europe, and North Africa, and her original compositions.

Having previously performed at the Richmond Folk Festival and The Kennedy Center, Nani is excited to return to Richmond. This special concert will honor the memory of those who perished in the October 7 attacks in Israel and express a hopeful vision for peace.
