Statement from Jewish Community Federation of Richmond

We are outraged and devastated by the IDF’s discovery yesterday of six brutally murdered hostages in Gaza. We mourn their losses and are heartbroken by the news that Richmond’s native son, Hersh Goldberg-Polin, 23, was among those bodies recovered. Hersh was abducted from the Nova music festival on October 7.

His parents, Rachel Goldberg-Polin and Jonathan Polin, have been courageous and outspoken advocates for the return of their son and all hostages. As a community, we offer our deepest condolences to them and the families of Eden Yerushalmi, 24, Ori Danino, 25, Alex Lubnov, 32, Carmel Gat, 40, and Almog Sarusi, 27.

May all their memories be for a blessing. #Bringthemhomenow

Statement from Weinstein Jewish Community Center

It is with deep sadness that we share the heartbreaking news of Hersh’s passing. Since that tragic day on October 7, we have held onto hope, praying for his safe return along with all the other hostages. Hersh was only 23 years old, celebrating his birthday with friends at a music festival when the unthinkable happened.

For nearly 11 months, the families of these hostages have endured unimaginable anguish. Today, we stand in solidarity with our community, mourning alongside them. This war has brought devastating loss to far too many.

Hersh was a beloved member of our Weinstein JCC family, bringing joy to our preschool with his sweet smile and gentle spirit. His parents, Rachel and Jon, have been deeply involved in our community, and Rachel has touched countless lives as both a teacher and a friend.

Our hearts, prayers, and deepest sympathies are with Rachel, Jon, and everyone who loved Hersh. We continue to pray for the safe return of those who are still waiting to be reunited with their families.

Statement from Governor Glenn Youngkin

After 330 agonizing days since the brutal terrorist attack on Israel on October 7th that left more than 1,200 dead and hundreds more held hostage, Johnathan Polin and Rachel Goldberg woke up to unimaginable news that no parent should ever receive. Suzanne and I are angered and heartbroken by the death of Hersh Goldberg-Polin, a senseless murder at the hands of terrorists. Today, Virginians, Americans, and the world join the Goldberg-Polin family and the Keneseth Beth Israel Synagogue in prayer.

The Governor  ordered the flags to be flown at half-staff in memory and honor of Hersh Goldberg-Polin.
