A team of Or Ami volunteers gathered bamboo and built the Or Ami Sukkah.

On Friday, Oct. 18, members and friends gathered under the Sukkah for a potluck dinner.   This was followed by a Sukkot Shabbat service where people were invited to shake the lulav and etrog.

Or Ami is excited to unveil its new logo to the community, designed by graphic artist Amy Mendelsohn Cheeley.

The logo continues to represent Or Ami’s long-standing spirit as “a dynamic sacred community grounded in Reform Judaism.”

The movement and flow of the star reflect the warm embrace one receives in our caring and inclusive community.  The leaves represent the connection to the intricate Tree of Life carving on our ark doors, as well as the serene landscape where our synagogue resides.

When you’re at Or Ami, you feel a deep connection to the world and the nature around you.  This is exemplified by the calm and peaceful feeling we have from looking out through our sanctuary’s glass wall.

When our family lived in Singapore from 2015 – 2017, we became part of a beautiful and intimate reform congregation. I feared that I’d never experience that same feeling from another synagogue.  That was until we joined Congregation Or Ami.  The motion in the star is a perfect example of the dynamic and inspiring sense members feel as part of the congregation.

The creativity that flows around the sanctuary and beyond can be experienced through our Jewish meditation, Rabbi Ahuva’s meaningful and engaging services, guest speakers, several clubs, and even in tasting our delicious challah of the week at every Shabbat.

The leaves in our logo also resemble flames.  Or Ami, literally meaning “the light of our people,” truly shines through every aspect of life in our congregation.  I am so grateful for Or Ami’s leadership and community, and proud to be a member where I find meaning and a deep connection to Judaism.

Book Club

The Or Ami Book Club will meet on Nov. 4 (Monday) at 7 p.m.  We are reading “When I Grow Up” by Ken Krimstein.

It is graphic non-fiction based on never-published autobiographies of Eastern European Jewish teens before WWII.

There will be a New Member Shabbat service on Nov. 15 when Or Ami will welcome 13 new families.

Looking forward to New Year’s Eve, Dec. 31, from 7:30 to 10 p.m. when Or Ami will celebrate with heavy hors d’oeuvres, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages and featuring the Antique Melody Band. They will play a sentimental splash of jazz-age swing and rare tuneful ditties.  $55 at the door.
