Feb. 3 –   “The Heartstrings” BACK BY POPULAR DEMAND: Join this talented Women’s Singing Group. Stroll down memory lane with some of your favorite songs! Come sing and dance along with the group.  Special Time: 10:30 a.m.

Feb. 10 Karl Rhodes, author of “REFUSING TO FIGHT.” He will talk about his new book, “Peggy’s War,” the story of his great-great-grandmother, who ran a depot on the underground railroad for Mennonites and Dunkers who refused to fight in the Civil War. Peggy concealed five to six draft dodgers and deserters at a time in a secret cellar below a trapdoor in her bedroom floor. The story takes place mostly in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley.

Feb. 17 –  ENRICHElizabeth Gonzalez James, Screenwriter and best-selling author of novels, “The Bullet Swallower” and “”Mona at the Sea,” as well as the chapbook, “Five Conversations About Peter Sellers.” Her newest book, “The Bullet Swallower” was named a best book of 2024 by NPR and Esquire.

The book asks: “Is goodness even possible after a life (or history) of crimes? Can we as individuals and communities steer toward new ways of being Americans together? Elizabeth has been featured on the MSNBC documentary, “My Generation” representing the millennials and currently lives in Massachusetts.

She is the daughter-in-law of JCC/5400 Club members Bathea and Sam James.

Feb. 24 – Sam James, professor emeritus with a specialty in nephrology. His areas of expertise include hypertension, chronic kidney failure, dialysis and transplantation. His topic: “Kidneys in an Aging Population.”
