President’s Corner – Welcome Back Arlene Wiener

It has been a month since 2025 started, but as I write this article the calendar has not quite turned the page so New Year’s is front and center for me.

The new year can be a time for goal setting – one of mine is to assume the Hadassah Richmond chapter presidency again.

The Elinor Bloom Marshall event held in October 2024 inspired me to want to lead the chapter again.

I am in awe of the $150,000 raised for Hadassah Hospital, the talented committee members that made the event happen and the over 200 guests that attended the occasion.

Some of you know me, others may not. I want to reintroduce myself. I was raised in Brooklyn, N.Y. I lived most of my adult life in Scotch Plains, N.J., until 2020 when I re-located to Richmond.

My adult sons live in Maryland and when a job opportunity presented itself in Richmond, for which I would be geographically closer to the kids, I decided to walk through the door.

I have been an actuary for 40 years working for several insurance companies and I now work for Genworth.

Despite moving to Richmond six-weeks before we locked down due to the pandemic, I immersed myself in the Jewish community – joining Temple Beth-El, the JCC and Hadassah.

My 85-year-old mom lives in Whippany, N.J., at Lester Senior Housing under the auspices of the Jewish Federation of MetroWest NJ. As a result, I can be found on I-95 once a month driving up and back to visit her.

Yes, I am busy with working full time, caring for my mom long distance and keeping up with my kids, but I intend to find time for Hadassah.

I ask you to join me in donating some of your 2025 personal time to Hadassah as well. What that means is up to you. Come to an advocacy event, a book discussion, a luncheon.

Lead a walk in one of Richmond’s historic districts, sponsor a meet and greet to make new friends, or organize a health program.

Bring me your ideas! I look forward to hearing from you. I have just told you about myself; please tell me about you!
