February marks Black History Month—a time to reflect on the rich history, struggles, and contributions of African Americans to the fabric of American life.
This month also offers an opportunity to explore the complex and intertwined histories of Black and Jewish communities—relationships defined by both periods of collaboration, such as during the Civil Rights Movement, and moments of tension stemming from differing perspectives on Zionism, affirmative action, and socio-economic realities.
Adding to this dialogue through the power of music is The Afro-Semitic Experience, a dynamic musical revue that explores the rich cultural and musical connections between African, African American, and Jewish traditions.
The band combines a diverse mix of styles, exceptional musicianship, soulful grooves, and thoughtful songwriting—all tied together with their guiding message: Unity in the Community.
Founded in 1998 by African American jazz pianist Warren Byrd and Jewish-American jazz bassist David Chevan, the group has performed at festivals, churches, synagogues, colleges, and community events across the country. Known for their electrifying performances celebrating history, culture, and shared experiences, the band creates spaces for audiences to connect, learn, and dance together.
The performers return to Richmond as part of a special musician-in-residence program, hosted by Congregation Beth Ahabah, Weinstein JCC, and YMCA with support from the Jewish Community Federation of Richmond.
The residency takes place the weekend of Feb. 7-8, and will feature community workshops and performances that highlight the power of music to foster connection and shared understanding.
The workshops will be held for children in the Weinstein JCC Preschool and teens from YMCA to engage with the band’s musicians and explore themes of history, culture, and expression through music.
In addition, the weekend will include community-welcome performances at First Friday Shabbat Services at Beth Ahabah on Friday, Feb. 7, at 6:15 p.m. and Unity in the Community, a concert at the Weinstein JCC on Saturday, Feb. 8, at 6:30 p.m. featuring youth participants from the workshops and performances by The Afro-Semitic Experience.
These events promise musical joy and a shared opportunity to explore history, culture, and community through artistic collaboration.
