Hadassah Richmond’s advocacy team continued to work diligently during the 2025 General Assembly to follow the bills germane to our current legislative priorities as well as the broader priorities of the general Jewish community.

As Hadassah consistently supports efforts to affirm and safeguard women’s health, we have vigilantly followed each of the women’s health bills relating to contraception, infertility, maternal health, and general women’s health.

Our biggest priority has been two bills, one from the House and another from the Senate, which seek to enshrine women’s reproductive rights into the Virginia constitution.  On Crossover Day, Feb. 4, both bills, SJ247 & HJ1 had passed their chamber and HJ1 has also passed the Senate.

These legislative committee wins were the first in a lengthy process in Virginia to pass a constitutional amendment.

It requires a bill to be approved during two General Assemblies, this year, 2025 and next, 2026. The process also necessitates that there be an election year in between and then finally it will go to the electorate.

We trust that this year has set a positive tone and the amendment will become law.
