At the turn of the Spring semester, Hillel at VCU was thrilled to welcome students into their new Hillel House, conveniently located near campus on Grace Street.
This space serves as a safe, comfortable gathering place for Jewish students to study, connect, and recharge.

For many, it has become a home away from home – a welcoming refuge beyond their dorms and classrooms.
Hillel also offers open study hours, allowing students to use the space informally as a quiet and supportive environment.
In January, Hillel proudly installed five students to the newly elected board, equipping them with leadership skills and empowering them to serve as ambassadors for Hillel.

In February, Hillel welcomed Sheri Rodman as the new interim director. With extensive experience in education, nonprofit operations, and Jewish community engagement, Sheri has hit the ground running.

“I am excited to foster a vibrant, inclusive community at Hillel at VCU and help college students connect with Jewish life and learning,” says Sheri. “I look forward to empowering Jewish students and supporting their families in all aspects of their college journeys and strengthening the partnerships between local Jewish agencies and Hillel.”
In February and March, several engaging programs took place, starting with the inaugural Shabbat dinner at the Hillel House.
This event brought students together in a warm and joyful setting, fostering a sense of community. Additionally, a “Torah on Tap” session was held, focusing on Tu Bishvat. The conversation explored how we can care for trees, the planet, and each other through a Jewish perspective.
Another highlight was a “Lunch and Learn” event co-hosted by Dr. Sam Kessler, VCU’s Harry Lyons Chair in Judaic Studies, and guest Rabbanit Leah Sarna, an award-winning Jewish educator, author, and scholar. (Photo at top)
They led a compelling discussion about the Meneket Rivkah, the first printed Torah book by a woman. Before heading off on spring break, students baked hamantaschen for an early Purim celebration.
