April is National Volunteer Month and at JFS Richmond, we are deeply fortunate to have a dedicated and compassionate group of volunteers who make our work possible.
Since the very beginning of JFS history, volunteerism has been the heartbeat of our organization.
Whether they are assisting with administrative tasks, offering emotional support to those receiving telephone reassurance calls, or helping families access critical resources, our volunteers embody the values of kindness, empathy, and community that are at the core of JFS. Our volunteers provide more than just time—they offer hope, understanding, and a sense of belonging. We asked two of our volunteers what makes JFS a great place to volunteer your time.
Susan Davis is a long-time friend of JFS and a dedicated Telephone Reassurance caller.
“I had known someone who was a JFS Telephone Reassurance caller and I thought well I’m good at talking on the phone and I’ve been doing it every morning ever since, 30 years now. I have helped in other roles for JFS but TR [Telephone Reassurance] is my home. I love the support I get from being a part of the team, I always feel so appreciated by not only the clients but the staff at JFS as well. In my 30-year journey here I’ve never felt left alone to figure things out by myself, there is always someone who is willing to help guide me whenever I have questions. I help with other organizations because I like their concept, but I keep coming back to JFS because it is just a joy to be a part. Being here is really special to me. Next to my grandchildren, it’s [JFS] my favorite thing to talk about!”
Elizabeth Edwards is a newer volunteer in JFS administrative office.
“I wanted to get back into the work force after being a stay-at-home mom for so long, but I knew I needed to get some experience and JFS was the perfect fit. I really love working with the staff and getting to know the caregivers. I feel confident and it feels like I really am a part of a team.”
JFS wants to thank all our volunteers for the countless hours they’ve dedicated to our mission over many years. Their efforts help transform lives and build a stronger, more compassionate community. We are endlessly grateful for everything they do.
Jewish Family Services is supported, in part, by a generous contribution and programming grants from the Jewish Community Federation of Richmond.
