By Arielle Falzone
I moved from LA with my husband in August 2023, and one of the first things I started looking for was a way to feel more connected to the Jewish community here in Richmond.
After doing some research and asking around, I met with Avi Remetz at the Jewish Community Federation of Richmond to learn about where I could plug in.
He shared a bunch of opportunities, including the Community Leadership Institute (CLI) program—and I’m so glad I applied. It was the perfect way to jump-start my involvement and feel part of something right away.
Through CLI, I got to meet with leaders from organizations like Jewish Family Services, Rudlin Torah Academy, the Weinstein JCC, and more.
Each week, we learned about the different ways the Richmond Jewish Community Federation and these organizations support Jewish life—not just here in Richmond, but around the world.
It gave me such a better understanding of how everything is connected, and how many ways there are to get involved and give back.
One of the best parts of CLI was the friendships that came from it. I was in the cohort with my friend Evie Metz, who I met through JCFR’s Pearl Society, and it was so fun to go through the program together.
I also made new connections—like Rachel Weinberg Rue, who invited me to visit Or Atid with her and her husband.
Now, when I walk into Jewish spaces, whether it’s a synagogue or a Federation event, I see so many familiar, welcoming faces.
It makes Richmond feel even more like home.
Next year, I’m thrilled to be serving as the CLI Chair for the 2025–2026 cohort.
I can’t wait to help bring the next group together and create a fun, meaningful experience.
If you’re curious about joining or just want to meet the crew, come hang out with us on May 15 at Mainline Brewing—we’d love to see you there!
