Virginia Opera’s performance of Siegfried, one of the operas in Richard Wagner’s Ring Cycle, will take place in Richmond on Oct. 13 and 15.

Considered the most monumental operatic experience, Wagner’s Ring has wielded tremendous influence on Western culture and has changed the way people listen. And yet, the fact that Wagner harbored antisemitic sentiments is both well-known and uncontested within the realm of musicological inquiry.

Join Adam Turner, Artistic Director, Virginia Opera; and Cantor Sarah Beck-Berman, Congregation Beth Ahabah, for an engaging conversation confronting the life and works of Richard Wagner at the Weinstein JCC on Wednesday, Oct. 4 at 6:30 p.m.

The Weinstein JCC and the Jewish Community Federation of Richmond are proud to partner with Virginia Opera to cohost this panel discussion to help answer questions relevant to today’s culture. “How do we separate a creator from their work?” “How does context of the creation change the performance we see?” “Why perform these pieces at all?”

Alexandra Loutsion

In addition to a thought-provoking discussion, soprano, Alexandra Loutsian, who plays the role of Brunnhilde in Virginia Opera’s production of Siegfried, will also perform.

Whether you are preparing to attend a Virginia Opera performance of Siegfried or simply interested in learning more, this discussion about the complexities that exist between those who create art, the art they create, and the world around them.

This program is free and open to the community. RSVP is appreciated. www.weinsteinjcc.org.
