Happenings at Beth Ahabah

As outside temperatures heat up, programming has slowed down – but that doesn’t mean that summer hasn’t been busy at Beth Ahabah!

The congregation recently received a Federal Nonprofit Security Grant through the Virginia Department of Emergency Management to assist with its emergency preparedness efforts.

As a result, additional grates for windows and security window film have been installed, as well as more security cameras around the exterior of the campus. A portion of the West Franklin Street sidewalk will be replaced and 16 new bollards will be installed within the coming weeks.

These enhancements will help keep Beth Ahabah members, guests, and staff safer than ever! In addition to the grant-funded improvements, the sanctuary’s historic stained-glass windows will be inspected, cleaned, and secured.

Of course, summer wouldn’t be complete without a picnic – or two! On Friday, July 7th, the Beth Ahabah Brotherhood grilled delicious hot dogs and burgers that they then served to a hungry crowd at the end of the evening’s Erev Shabbat service.

After the meal, Beth Ahabah’s Cub Scout Pack 437 hosted rounds of Pinewood Derby races, and everyone had the opportunity to play ping-pong and other games. We are eagerly anticipating our second picnic of the summer in August!

Beth Ahabah’s Young Adult Community Kibbitz (YACK) has also been busy. In July, the group held a game night at Beth Ahabah with retro video games, ping-pong, cards, and board games.

Everyone enjoyed snacks and getting to know one another. The group is looking forward to a bowling night in August and a hike in October. YACK is open to all young adults (20s – 45-ish) in the Richmond Jewish community.

Although the heat and humidity will likely be with us for a while longer, fall is not far away!

Planning for the High Holy Days is well underway, and Religious School will begin on Oct. 1st for First Steps (pre-K) – 7th grades. Teen Beit Midrash classes (8th – 10th grades) and adult education classes will begin shortly thereafter.

Religious School registration is now open for First Steps – 7th graders.
