Susan Packer Farris was honored recently with a Champions of Mentoring award by Mentor Virginia during its 30th anniversary special event.
She was recognized for her many years of volunteering with the Federation’s Richmond Jewish Coalition for Literacy (RJCL), and mentoring Mikhail, now 18 years old.
Longtime leader of RJCL Miriam Davidow noted, “Susan, congratulations on being singled out as a Champions of Mentoring with Mentor Virginia!!! You and Mikhail are such an amazing team, and he is so lucky to have you in his life!”
She added, “Thank you for ALL that you do. We are proud of you and of all that you have accomplished in his life! Enjoy your moment!!!”
Farris said, “Mentoring Mikhail from kindergarten thru 12th grade has brought me joy. I am very pleased to accept this Champions of Mentoring recognition with the realization that RJCL began with your leadership. Because of your initiative, children have advocates through their mentors. That’s what I’ve tried to do for Mikhail.”
She continued, “Our teamwork began when he learned to tie his shoes in kindergarten. That’s when his determination won my heart. It’s hard to believe that now, as a senior at Community High School, he’s applying to colleges.”
She noted, “Every Monday we connect when I drive him to his rehearsal for Greater Richmond Children’s Choir, which has given him opportunities to learn choral music and sing in many venues. GRCC has been invited to perform with the Richmond Symphony this November in their Let It Snow program at the Dominion Center. I’m very proud of him.”
