Author Anne Blankman to visit the 6th and 7th Grade

In these photos, Karen Kruger, writer and producer of the film, Letters from Brno, shares her family story, letters and photos with teens on Sunday, Jan. 28.

We are thrilled to welcome Anne Blankman back to our 6th and 7th grade on March 17th to meet with our middle school students. Students are reading her novel, The Blackbird Girls that centers on the story of two girls, one Jewish, one Russian, and how the disaster of Chernobyl plummets them into a reckoning between bigotry and trust.

The story weaves generational narratives of the Holocaust (1941) and Jewish life in the Soviet Union (1986) and explores themes of resilience and humanity in the face of disaster.

It examines the generational effects of antisemitism during the Holocaust and the subsequent discrimination against Jews in the Soviet Union. A National Jewish Book Award winner, and local Richmonder, Ms. Blankman will meet with students and tell her real-life story.
