With a belief that music has the power to provide connection, foster relationships and promote peace, Weinstein JCC has established a new, inclusive choir, Voices in Peace, whose mission is to enrich and inspire the Richmond community through music.

The community choir initiative was made possible through the generous support of the Making Music Happen Grant of the JCCA of North America and our dedicated sponsors, Dr. Nathan and Lisa Zasler.

Voices in Peace is a testament to the unifying power of music, connecting individuals from diverse backgrounds, faiths, and cultural identities.

Under the accomplished guidance of choral directors, Natan Berenshteyn, Choral Director of Atlee High School and Congregation Beth Ahabah, and James B. Barrack, Choral Director of Meadowbrook High School, a diverse, inclusive community choir with singers of various backgrounds, faiths and cultural identities was assembled.

Participants were introduced to the world of Jewish choral music, many of whom were unfamiliar. Not only did they cultivate an appreciation for Jewish choral music, but also gained understanding of the Jewish religion and formed invaluable relationships with fellow choir members.

The 60+ person choir gathered once a week at the Weinstein JCC. Rehearsals spanned from mid-April to mid-October, followed by two community performances this fall.

Performances received a warm reception, leaving the audience inspired and moved. The concert at the Weinstein JCC drew an audience of 300 people, while the concert at Meadowbrook High School saw 200 attendees.

In an especially challenging and divisive time, the choir’s performances served as a powerful reminder of the values that bind us together.
