In the heart of the welcoming Jewish community in RVA, two young Israeli women, Tal and Yarden, have discovered a home away from home.

As representatives of the Jewish Agency for Israel, Tal and Yarden embarked on a journey that led them to Camp Hilbert, an acclaimed Weinstein JCC summer day camp nestled in the lush countryside of Goochland County.

Tal and Yarden have been embraced by the Richmond Jewish community since their arrival. Two remarkable families opened their hearts and homes, treating the Shlichim (Israeli emissaries) as cherished members of their own families.

Robyn and David Galpern, compassionate hosts, expressed their joy in hosting Tal and Yarden, encouraging other families to consider the opportunity.

“More families should host,” they exclaimed. “Open your doors and hearts. The rewards are immeasurable, enriching both your lives and those you welcome.”

Melissa Krumbein, a dedicated host, shared her experience hosting Shlichim and praised Tal and Yarden as “amazing women!”

She emphasized the deep connection formed with each Shaliach, surpassing their brief stay. “These Shlichim have become our family,” she declared.

“Embracing them as our own children, even for two weeks, we celebrate this bond daily. Consider hosting; it fills your heart with joy and leaves an indelible mark on your soul.”

Camp Hilbert, at the Weinstein JCC, has given Tal and Yarden a remarkable platform to share their love for Israel and its rich culture with campers from grades K to 9.

Through “Israeli Culture” activities, the Shlichim engage the children in Israeli games, Hebrew lessons, exploration of symbols, and cooking Israeli delicacies. The conversations about Israel and warm reception make Tal and Yarden feel at home.

Tal expressed gratitude for her time at Camp Hilbert, acknowledging the powerful feelings of joy and meaning.

“The beauty of nature here is stunning,” she said. “But nothing compares to the views in Israel. Come visit; experience the history, legacy, and the feeling of home!”

As Tal and Yarden prepare to bid farewell, they leave behind lasting friendships and a commitment to strengthening the Israel-U.S. bond. The impact of their presence resonates, emphasizing cultural exchange and the power of hospitality to connect beyond borders.

Hosting Israeli Shlichim proves transformative, forging lifelong connections and supporting the Jewish community. Memories and bonds formed during this short period endure for a lifetime.

With hearts filled with gratitude, Tal and Yarden cherish their remaining time at Camp Hilbert. Alongside the host families, they eagerly await the next summer, knowing their connections will endure.

The Weinstein JCC is supported, in part, by a generous annual contribution, and programming grants from the Jewish Community Federation of Richmond. The JCFR provided 50% of the funding for the two Israeli emissaries to be part of the Camp Hilbert and Jewish Community experience this summer.
